How to Get Your Business to the Top of Google, Without the Jargon

A Google search for a business

Every guide about ranking on Google seems to be written for other marketers. They’re packed with acronyms, buzzwords, and “it depends” answers that leave busy business owners more confused than before.

This one is different. No jargon, no fluff, just a look at what can actually move your business up the results page.

First, What Does “The Top of Google” Even Mean?

When people think “the top of Google,” they might instinctively picture the first link in a long list of links. But it isn’t that simple anymore. When you search for something today, you don’t just get a list. You get several different spots where a business can show up:

  • The map results (the “local pack”): the little map with three businesses near the top. This is prime real estate for local companies with physical addresses.
  • The regular links: the classic search results, earned through good content and a healthy website. This is what most people mean by “SEO.”
  • The ads: the spots that are marked “Sponsored.” You pay to appear here, and they can show up instantly.
  • AI answers: Google’s AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT now summarize answers right at the top, often pulling from a handful of trusted sources.

Getting to “the top” isn’t one thing. It’s showing up in the spots your customers actually look at. Which of these spots matters most depends on your business.

The Fundamentals of Getting Found

Forget the countless “ranking factors” you’ve read about. Almost everything that matters comes down to a few simple ideas. Here they are.

1. Make Sure Google Can Actually Find Your Site

Google can’t rank a page it can’t read. Before anything else, the basics need to be in place:

  • Your pages load quickly and work properly on a phone.
  • Each page has a clear title and purpose.
  • Google isn’t accidentally being blocked from seeing your pages.
  • Your site is built on a clean, modern foundation rather than a slow, outdated one.

If your website is dated or sluggish, then correcting that is priority one. A solid website build or redesign often does more for your rankings than any clever SEO trick.

2. Claim and Polish Your Google Business Profile

For local businesses, this is the single biggest lever — and it’s free! A complete, active profile tells Google you’re a real, trustworthy business worth showing to nearby customers. Your Google Business Profile is what powers those map results. To make it work for you:

  • Claim it and verify it’s really yours.
  • Fill in everything (hours, services, service areas, phone number, etc.)
  • Add photos of your work, your team, and your location.
  • Keep your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere they appear online.
  • Post updates and respond to reviews regularly.

3. Write Pages That Answer What People Are Actually Searching

This is the heart of search engine optimization. Google’s whole job is matching searchers with the best answer. So give it clear answers:

  • Have a dedicated page for each main service you offer, not one page that lists everything.
  • Use the words your customers actually use (“emergency plumber,” not “hydronic remediation specialist.”)
  • Answer the real questions people ask before they buy: cost, timing, what’s included, what to expect.
  • Make each page genuinely different. Ten near-identical pages help no one.

The goal isn’t to stuff keywords everywhere. It’s to be the most useful, clear, and authoritative page on the topic.

4. Earn Reviews and Manage Your Reputation

Reviews do double duty: they convince customers, and they signal to Google that you’re legitimate and well-regarded. A steady stream of honest, recent reviews beats a pile of old ones. Here are the basics:

  • Ask happy customers to leave a review — most are glad to, they just need a nudge.
  • Respond to every review, good or bad, calmly and professionally.
  • Don’t ignore the occasional negative review; a thoughtful reply often impresses readers more than a wall of five stars.

5. Build Authority Over Time

Google trusts websites that other reputable sites and sources link to. There’s no shortcut here, and any service promising “1,000 backlinks overnight” will do more harm than good. You build this the slow, honest way:

  • Get listed in relevant local and industry directories.
  • Earn mentions from local news, partners, suppliers, and organizations you’re part of.
  • Create content worth linking to and sharing in the first place.

6. Show Up in AI Answers

More people are getting answers straight from AI Overviews and ChatGPT without clicking on a single website. Being cited in those answers comes from:

  • Clear, well-organized pages that AI tools can easily read and summarize.
  • Consistent, accurate information about your business across the web.
  • A reputation strong enough that AI tools treat you as a trustworthy source.

7. When You Need Results Now, Consider Ads

SEO is a long game that builds momentum to pay off for years. But it takes time. When you need the phone ringing this week, paid options fill the gap. The smart play is to utilize both: ads for quick wins while your SEO builds for the long haul.

There are also different options to consider for pair search. Pay-per-click ads put you at the top of search results immediately. Local Service Ads put you at the very top with a “Google Guaranteed” badge, and you only pay for real leads.

The Short Version

If you only remember a few things from this blog, remember these:

  • Fix your site’s foundation to provide a fast, clean, mobile-friendly experience.
  • Own your Google Business Profile and keep it active.
  • Build clear pages that answer what customers really search for.
  • Earn reviews and curate a solid reputation.
  • Stay visible as search shifts toward AI answers.
  • Be patient and keep at it!

After growing up in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY (Garbage Plate region) and being an artsy athlete at school, I went to college for Graphic Design and to play lacrosse. After graduating from RIT I’ve moved everywhere – Oklahoma, Texas, Cali, Nevada, and back home to New York. I’ve always loved exploring new places, but the Finger Lakes is where I want to settle down – there is truly no place like it.

Working in digital marketing gives you that new place mindset – it’s always changing, and I’ve loved this job because of that. I love celebrating the wins with employees and client success.

I spent half of my childhood growing up in Nashville and the second half in Chicago. Right out of high school, I joined the Army where I learned a lot about growth. I got out of the Army in 1997 and started my own company that became AGI Marketing. We began as a graphics and vehicle wrap company, but as I saw the world start to shift to digital and the need to be online, we transformed into a digital agency.

We have grown considerably since that shift. I am obsessed with growth – for my staff, family, the company, and myself, and we love being able to help businesses grow. Outside of the office, I have five children, three grandchildren, and a wonderful wife. I am very involved in my Christian church and enjoy traveling!
