Web Development Versus Web Design

Confusing web design with web development is an all-too-common mistake that people make. Many people use these terms interchangeably. In fact, the terms reference two fundamentally different aspects of the website building process requiring two unique skill sets. However, both are necessary in order to get a site up and running and looking right. As the saying goes, “You can’t have one without the other.” As true as that is, there are few people who can do both well. AGI Marketing can help you with your web development and design needs to get your company name out on the internet.

What is Web Design?

Web design is the art of designing a single part of a website. This could be a page or pages that are live on the web and accessed by visitors and customers. It involves how the site looks and works. It takes into account the principles of good visual design along with a deep understanding of user experience and the client’s needs.

A web designer’s primary focus is what a site should look like and contain. This is primarily visual and organizational. He or she needs to take into consideration the balance of colors between both light and dark and heavy and light, as well as their contrasting features. The site must also have a consistent look that highlights what the client wants to stand out.

What is Web Development?

Conversely, web development is done by programmers who write the actual code and scripts that take the web design and bring it to digital life. Those involved in web development take the design and build it into a fully functioning website. Web developers convert a static layout into a dynamic website by using image and content sliders, active states for links and buttons, and other interactive elements. This is done through HTML or another similar language.

How Web Design and Web Development Work Together

While they require two different sets of skills, web design and web development are a connected partnership of sorts. Web development is the how while web design is the what. While there are some people who know how to do both, web design is creative and web development is analytic.

Whether you are in the market for web design, web development, or both, and are in the El Paso area contact AGI Marketing. They have the team to help make your website the dynamic internet destination you dream about.

After growing up in the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY (Garbage Plate region) and being an artsy athlete at school, I went to college for Graphic Design and to play lacrosse. After graduating from RIT I’ve moved everywhere – Oklahoma, Texas, Cali, Nevada, and back home to New York. I’ve always loved exploring new places, but the Finger Lakes is where I want to settle down – there is truly no place like it.

Working in digital marketing gives you that new place mindset – it’s always changing, and I’ve loved this job because of that. I love celebrating the wins with employees and client success.

I spent half of my childhood growing up in Nashville and the second half in Chicago. Right out of high school, I joined the Army where I learned a lot about growth. I got out of the Army in 1997 and started my own company that became AGI Marketing. We began as a graphics and vehicle wrap company, but as I saw the world start to shift to digital and the need to be online, we transformed into a digital agency.

We have grown considerably since that shift. I am obsessed with growth – for my staff, family, the company, and myself, and we love being able to help businesses grow. Outside of the office, I have five children, three grandchildren, and a wonderful wife. I am very involved in my Christian church and enjoy traveling!
